Antimicrobial Compounds from Eukaryotic Microalgae against Human Pathogens and Diseases in Aquaculture ArchiMer
Falaise, Charlotte; Francois, Cyrille; Travers, Marie-agnes; Morga, Benjamin; Haure, Joel; Tremblay, Rejean; Turcotte, Francois; Pasetto, Pamela; Gastineau, Romain; Hardivillier, Yann; Leignel, Vincent; Mouget, Jean-luc.
The search for novel compounds of marine origin has increased in the last decades for their application in various areas such as pharmaceutical, human or animal nutrition, cosmetics or bioenergy. In this context of blue technology development, microalgae are of particular interest due to their immense biodiversity and their relatively simple growth needs. In this review, we discuss about the promising use of microalgae and microalgal compounds as sources of natural antibiotics against human pathogens but also about their potential to limit microbial infections in aquaculture. An alternative to conventional antibiotics is needed as the microbial resistance to these drugs is increasing in humans and animals. Furthermore, using natural antibiotics for...

Aquaculture system diversity and sustainable development: fish farms and their representation ArchiMer

Initiatives for the sustainable development of aquaculture have so far focused on the production of codes of conduct, of best management practices, of standards etc., most of which have been developed by international organisations, the industrial sector and non governmental organisations. They were, to a large extent, produced using a "top down" process and inspired by models from intensive industrial shrimp and sea fish farming (mainly salmon). However, most of global aquaculture production comes from small-and medium-sized farms, essentially in Asia which contributes 92% of the total world aquaculture production volume. The objective of this article is to define the contours of systemic typologies that are able to express the sustainability conditions...

Des systèmes intégrés multi-trophiques pour une aquaculture durable ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome; Richard, M..
Within the SEACASE European project on sustainable extensive and semi-intensive aquaculture in Southern Europe (SEACASE), an information day on integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems (IMTA) has been organized by Ifremer in Rochefort sur Mer, with the participation of other French partners of the project. After presenting the concept of IMTA, modern polyculture, the contents of the European research project SEACASE, and recent research carried out also were exposed. The interest of these systems and their implementation in future years to develop sustainable aquaculture has been discussed in a debate between the various participants.

Les systèmes intégrés en aquaculture marine : une solution durable pour un meilleur respect de l’environnement littoral ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome.
The former extensive polyculture systems of marine fish farming, are today replaced mainly by intensive monoculture systems (salmon, shrimp). These systems, multiplied in the same coastal zone, can present a significant environmental impact. To treat and value fish farming effluents, new integrated systems were constructed and tested to different scales. Some examples of land- and seabased systems around the world are presented, in particular the European project of innovation "Genesis" in which several French public and private, national and regional organisations are participants (IFREMER, Regional Centre of Experiment and Aquacultural Applications in Poitou- Charentes, IDEE). Recommendations are supplied to promote the development of the integrated fish...
